The Pan arrows will move the map in one direction by about 1/2 of the current screen extent. Imagine a window that is shifted/moved in the given direction to show a new view. The center Pan Tool (hand icon) is used to drag
the map in any direction and recenter the view. Simply click on the Pan Tool, then drag the map to a new location. |

The Zoom In Tool is used to enlarge a portion of the map. Select this tool, then click and draw a box on the map around the area that you wish to see in more detail. Clicking without drawing a box, will zoom in with the
center point where you clicked by a factor of 2. The Zoom Out Tool does the same thing in reverse. The box drawn with this tool is used to calculate a zoom out factor. A smaller box will zoom out more than a larger one. Clicking
without drawing a box, will zoom out with the center point where you clicked by a factor of 2. |
The Full Extent zoom tool will zoom out to the starting/initial extent of the map. The Zoom Previous tool will change the extent to the last extent (like an undo feature just for the zoom scale). |
The Find or Gazeteer tool (binoculars) is used to specify a place name and zoom to that place. The Zoom To Region tool is used to zoom to a portion of the data set. So, to quickly zoom to Denver, you would use the Gazeteer
and specify Denver in a text box, but to zoom to Colorado, you would use the Zoom To Region and pick the state from a drop down list. |

These tools are used to discover the attributes attached to spatial features in the map. Query is used to construct a relational-type query to return only matching records (spatial features) based upon attribute fields.
Identify All and Identify will return attributes for a feature under a point clicked on the map. Identify returns only features from the selected Active layer, and Identify All returns the attributes for all layers. |
The Selection tools are used to query spatially (using the map) and return matching features. The most common one is the Select by Rectangle which allows you to draw a box on the map and selects features from the Active layer
that intersect or reside inside that box. The other selection tools allow you to do the same thing with different shapes, or to add a feature to an existing selection by clicking on the feature in the map. |
The measure tool allows you to measure the distance between points on a map. When using the tool, it will display a cumulative total for the distance between points clicked on the map, and the approximate distance from the
last point to the current mouse position. Clear will clear the measure totals, and/or any selections or highlighted features from queries. |

These tools provide a method of producing output or saving the data locally. The print map button will produce a map that shows the same area, and the same layers in a new browser window. This new window will have no frames,
so it will not be interactive. The download button will allow the user to pick from a set of data sets available for download and will open a new window to the SDDS/E download interface for the selected data set. |
These tools provide information about the current view of data in the map. The Legend button will hide or show the layer classification or legend in the layer list. The Overview button will hide or show the Overview map
(locator map) if it is a layer on top of the map. (A layer on the map means it is on top of the map image, and not in a separate frame above the layer list.) The Map Information and Metadata button will display details on the
current extent, scale, image, etc. of the map view, and if available, information on the individual data sets displayed in the view. |
This will create or highlight additional features based upon a current selection. You must have some features previously selected using the selection tools to use this tool. |
The refresh will redraw the current view of the map, requerying the data layers, and recreating images. If the view is using combined map images, then the refresh will become a restart which will restart the application. This
is because refreshing the view is done everytime layers are turned on and off when using combined map images. You will know which if the viewer if the tool button says refresh rather than restart. |

The help tool will display these user instructions. |
